It seems fitting that our ride ended precisely
where it began, ten
long months ago: standing in the middle of the abandoned Alameda
Navy Base, with the San Francisco skyline across the bay, serving as
backdrop.
It seems fitting, also, that the final leg of the 2,002 in 2002 be
fraught with peril: storm clouds brewing overhead, fallen trees blocking
the bike path, a slow leak in my rear tire, muddle puddles deep as
Turkish foot baths. It gave those last twenty-one miles an appealing
sense of urgency and dramatic tension.
Will they make it to The Hornet before the typhoon hits? Or will
we see two lollipop-red bike helmets, bobbing in the bay?
And -- of course -- it seems especially fitting that the first thing
we wanted to do, as soon as we got home from our victory ride this
morning, is to jump online and share the news with you: all of
the loyal friends and readers and family members who have cheered us on,
all year long. Your support helped turn what started out for me as a
sort of *fantasy goal* -- something I wasn't sure I could actually
do -- into something solid and achievable. I drew a lot of
strength from your encouragement, your nagging, your advice and your
interest, these past ten months, and I'm very grateful for that.
What can I say? It's been one helluva ride, gang. Thanks for coming
along.

P.S. Actually ...
jumping online and sharing the news with you was the SECOND thing we did
when we got home. But you rate a solid #2, OK?
P.P.S. Yes, there will be an entry about the Christmas trip to
TicTac. [How could I NOT write about Christmas with my two husbands ...
the World's Cutest Nephew getting his finger stuck in a gingerbread
house ... Crazy Nutjob Airport Guy ... and all of the other exciting
adventures we had this past week?] Check back soon.
